Why Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a crucial European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.
In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to confirm a last eight berth.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
This talent is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.
He joined Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'
In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him playing time in the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that led to the meeting with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing the game, each day you go to train and each day you have a game," stated the player after his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and experience.
"He is a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He's extremely dynamic, with great stamina, effort and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand people are surprised to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to have a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's famous youth academy.
He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to represent either country at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they play in a official senior international match.
He has played for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.
In a recent interview, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."
This scenario echoes that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Diaz decided to represent the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.
He featured for over an hour in the two-one win at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club pursue trophies to come.
Following his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the win at Etihad Stadium.
