The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry mourns the loss to a true visionary whose impact on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
