Our team is verifying images and video posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site of where the images were from was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
