Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Alleges Unilever Blocked Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
The co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed that parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that co-founded the company with Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he plans to personally create this new product as part of an individual series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Between Creators and Corporate Owner
This latest announcement escalates the continuing disagreement among the world-famous ice cream maker with Unilever, the British packaged goods corporation that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders have claimed how Unilever and their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed via an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, asking for public suggestions for naming options and additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as a symbol of support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, that match those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Activism and Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business over to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales within disputed territories.
The new product line will be created through Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that was first established in 2016 to support ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Changes plus Future Plans
The founder indicated that he will create other ice cream flavors focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
This development follows partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after decades of involvement, mentioning worries that its independence was undermined following corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen remarked how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to keep working inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that it can fulfill the social mission, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
