In a statement at the moment of the September incident, the municipal authorities said that CCTV footage captured a person putting artificial eyes on the artwork, which locals have dubbed the “Cast in Blue”.
Ms Vanderhorst made no plea and informed the court she was unwell, as reported by news outlets, with the judge recommending her to secure a lawyer before her next court date in the final month of the year.
The following day the reported event, the local mayor stated that restoration to the much-loved community sculpture would be costly as the adhesive eyes could not be detached without harming the art piece.
“This wilful damage to a valued community art is unacceptable and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor remarked in mid-September. “It is not harmless fun, it is pricey - it is also frustrating to those people of our society who have welcomed the Blue Blob.”
She added the local government would pursue the “significant” restoration expenses from those accountable for the vandalism.
At the time the sculpture was initially suggested, it received mixed reactions from the local community due to its price tag and design.
Costing A$136,000 ($89,000; sixty-eight thousand pounds), the sculpture represents a mythical megafauna, with the creators inspired by an ancient marsupial ant-eater discovered in nearby caverns that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
