American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay during the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official informed a news outlet on the weekend, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were instructed to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, leading airports to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated delays due to weather and other issues.

Over 3,000 US flights were delayed on the weekend, and Duffy stated he expects the circumstances to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," he remarked in an discussion on a weekend program, adding that he had spoken to several controllers to hear their concerns directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I drive Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.
