Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
